In essence, compost is a “pre-prepared food” for fungi. The composting process is designed to precisely engineer the nutrient composition and remove growth inhibitors to provide the best conditions for fungi to establish and grow.

Additional information

Appearance and physical characteristics

Color: Usually dark brown to black (depending on the raw materials). Light color indicates that the compost is immature.
Texture: It should have a loose, granular, and homogeneous texture. It should not be lumpy or have pieces of undecomposed raw materials (such as pieces of wood or plastic).
Smell: It should smell like forest soil or damp soil. An unpleasant, sour, or ammonia-like odor indicates incomplete decomposition or the presence of decaying material residues and is not good quality compost.
Moisture: The moisture content should be at the desired level (about 40 to 60 percent). It should not be too dry to produce dust, nor so wet that it becomes sticky and boggy.

Chemical and nutritional properties

pH: Should be close to neutral (usually between 6.5 and 7.5). A pH that is too acidic or alkaline can be harmful to plants.
Carbon to Nitrogen (C/N) Ratio: In a finished compost, this ratio should be low (preferably below 20 to 1). A low ratio indicates that the nitrogen is fixed and ready for plant uptake.
Nutrients (NPK): Should contain adequate amounts of the major nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), although their concentrations are lower than in chemical fertilizers. More important than high concentrations is the gradual and long-term supply of these elements.
Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC): A good compost should have a high CEC, which indicates its ability to retain nutrients and prevent them from leaching into the soil.

Biological characteristics

Complete decomposition: The raw materials should be completely decomposed. This indicates that the heat treatment (pasteurization) has been completed and that pathogens and weed seeds have been killed. Microbial activity: Quality compost should contain diverse and active populations of beneficial microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes) that contribute to the long-term health of the soil.
